My work is about alienation: from the self, from the world, and from personhood as a concept. I work primarily in oil painting but also gravitate towards printmaking, copper etching in particular, and am generally drawn to whatever will let me play with color and texture as much as possible.
My main sources of inspiration include German expressionism, cubism, and mid-20th century abstract sculpture. In my more personal works, I am interested in the tension between the ways in which one might be alienated by others as well as by oneself and the complicated feelings that might arise from sharing that responsibility. I am also interested in themes of desire and the grotesque.
By replacing the human subject with something distinctly odd and alien, such as a sculptural figure, I am exploring what it is to internalize one’s supposed wrongness and attempting to have compassion for what I consider to be an ugly tendency within myself.
